Balzan Robbery - Crime in Malta
The bomb
disposal unit was brought out after a package
was found on the porch of a family home in Balzan, which
turned out to contain leftover items from a five-figure robbery at a nearby
house. The cash was not found and is still unaccounted for, even though the
main suspect of the theft, an employee of the household, has been arrested.
They
said the robbery took place on the evening of Friday 14th December. Around
6pm a man noticed a package on his front porch and proceeded to call the police.
Police came on site and closed off the area while the AFM’s Bomb Disposal Unit came
to investigate. They found that the
package had no explosives. Instead, the package contained miscellaneous items
including an envelope which had the figure “€60,000” written on it. The police
checked the CCTV footage of a nearby residence. The only person seen on the video
entering the premises was the same employee, who was shown entering and leaving
the house three times in a short period of time. When he was approached by law enforcement
he began to tremble. He was arrested and taken in for questioning immediately.
The
police believe that the man, a Filipino, stole the items from the residence
where he had worked as a handyman for the last four years. The man may have
been planning to return the stolen items or the package may also have been
discarded because it was the money that the thieves were after, police sources
said. On Sunday afternoon, the man pleaded guilty to robbing €16,000, blaming a gambling addiction. Residents told The Sunday Times of Malta that there had been a rise in crime in the area during recent months.
In OSAC's report of crime in Malta in 2017, statistics revealed that theft was the
predominant criminal offense, making up just under half of the crimes committed
in Malta.
